Sarah F. Ives
Social Scientist, Author, and Educator
I am an anthropologist, researcher, and freelance writer.
I currently teach anthropology at City College of San Francisco. I previously taught writing and rhetoric and anthropology at Stanford University from 2014-2018.
In addition to my scholarly writing, I have written for National Geographic News, National Geographic Kids News, and Sierra Magazine. I have also conducted research and editorial assistance for organizations such as the Environmental Paper Network.
An interdisciplinary scholar, writer, and educator, my areas of focus include environmental studies, gender and sexuality, and southern Africa.
I earned my Ph.D. from Stanford University’s Department of Anthropology in 2014. I received my M.A. in geography from the University of Washington and my B.A. in geography with environmental studies from Dartmouth College.
I have experience teaching at the university and high-school level, and I have also worked in journalism and publishing.
I published my first book, Steeped in Heritage: The Racial Politics of South African Rooibos Tea, with Duke University Press in 2017.
